Defensive Foul, Not Verticality, defender jumps toward offensive player

This is an example of a defensive foul for illegal contact as the defender does not have verticality. The defender here does not maintain a vertical position, and instead he jumps TOWARD the shooter, and he initiates illegal contact. To be considered legal, the defender here must establish legal guarding position prior to the start of the offensive player’s upward motion AND he then must jump vertically in an attempt to defend the shot. The secondary defender here fails to meet that criteria, and instead he initiates illegal contact with his opponent, and thus, he commits a defensive foul.
