This is an example of a defensive foul, initiated by an offensive player moving into a defender’s outstretched arm. If contact is made when a defender is in this position, even it is initiated by the offensive player, it is a defensive foul, as the defender is responsible for his extended arm. On this play, the offensive player initiates contact during his upward motion by lunging away from the basket – and coming up and under the defender’s arm. This is a defensive foul because at the time of contact, the defender did not have his arms vertical and he didn’t withdraw them to avoid contact. Note also that the play occurs outside the Lower Defensive Box and the offensive player is clearly lunging away from the basket. Because of those factors, this is not deemed a field goal attempt, and thus, this would be ruled a non-shooting foul.
