This is an example of a defensive foul, initiated by an offensive player moving into a defender’s outstretched arm. If contact is made when a defender is in this position, even if it is initiated by the offensive player, it is a defensive foul, as the defender is responsible for his extended arm. On this play, the defender extends his arm, and as the offensive player starts his upward shooting motion toward the basket, he creates contact with the defender’s extended arm and he draws the defensive foul. Since the contact occurred during the shooter’s upward motion, this would be ruled a foul in the act of shooting. To avoid being assessed a defensive foul, the defender must pull his arm back to avoid contact or position it vertically overhead.
