This is an example of a defensive foul, committed PRIOR to the start of the upward shooting motion by the offensive player. When there is no penalty situation in effect, if a defender takes a foul against an offensive player with the ball to stop play, no continuation will be awarded unless the offensive player has already started an upward shooting motion towards the basket or it is imminent that the game or shot clock will expire or he is driving to the basket. On this play, the defensive player takes the foul in the backcourt and the offensive player THEN starts his upward motion to shoot. Again, no free throws shall be awarded on this play unless the penalty is in effect.
