“This is an example of a defensive foul that occurs on a rip through move. The offensive player, Karl-Anthony Towns, makes a legitimate basketball move as he rips through the left arm of the defender, Bennedict Mathurin, while facing the basket. Since the foul occurred on the side-to-side motion, this is a common foul, and not a foul in the act of shooting. Note that if a defensive player has his arm extended towards an offensive player with the ball who initiates contact with that defensive player’s arm by ‘ripping-through’ from side-to-side, a defensive foul will be assessed.”
