Defensive Foul, contact occurs on side-to-side movement Defensive Foul, contact occurs on side-to-side movement Shooting Foul, contact occurs on upward shooting motion
“This is an example of a defensive foul that occurs on a rip through move. The offensive player, Bradley Beal, makes a legitimate basketball move as he rips through the left arm of the defender, Mason Plumlee, while facing the basket. Since the foul occurred on the side-to-side motion, this is a common foul, and not a foul in the act of shooting. Note that if a defensive player has his arm extended towards an offensive player with the ball who initiates contact with that defensive player’s arm by ripping-through from side-to-side, a defensive foul will be assessed.”
