“This is an example of a defensive foul for illegal contact, as the defender does not maintain legal verticality. The defender, Mario Hezonja, does not maintain a legal vertical position, as his arms are tilted forward over the vertical space of the offensive player, Ja Morant, and the defender makes illegal contact with his arms to the offensive player. To be considered legal, the defensive player must establish legal guarding position prior to the start of the offensive player’s upward motion, and he must also maintain his verticality as he attempts to defend the shot. Again, this is a defensive foul.”
