Defensive Foul, defender does not maintain verticality, jumps A to B

“This is an example of a defensive foul for illegal contact, as the defender does not maintain legal verticality. The defender, Thon Maker, does not maintain a legal vertical position, as he jumps toward the shooter, Jimmy Butler, and in doing so, the defender initiates illegal contact. To be considered legal, the defensive player must establish legal guarding position prior to the start of the offensive player’s upward motion, and he must also jump vertically in an attempt to defend the shot. The secondary defender here fails to meet that criteria, and even though the block itself is legal, the defender jumping from point A to point B is illegal, and it is a defensive foul.”
