Defensive Foul, Not Verticality, Defender’s arms at 45 degrees
This is an example of a defensive foul for illegal contact as the defender does not have verticality. Since the offensive player receives the ball inside the Lower Defensive Box, the defender may be legally positioned within the Restricted Area, which he is. But the defender’s arms are tilted forward over the vertical space of his opponent, and even though the contact is then initiated by the offensive player’s upward shooting motion, the foul is called on the defender for being in an illegal position at the time of the contact. This is a defensive foul for illegal contact by a defensive player during an opponent’s field goal attempt.
