Foul NOT in the act of shooting, offensive player takes shot while behind backboard Foul in the act of shooting, defense pushes offensive player into shooter Foul in the act of shooting, defender pushes screener into shooter
“This is an example of an off-ball defensive foul that occurs while a second offensive player is in the act of shooting. The defensive player off the ball, Hassan Whiteside, initiates illegal contact with an offensive player, Aron Baynes, and he pushes him into his teammate, Dario Saric. This illegal contact occurs after the offensive player with the ball has started his upward shooting motion. Since the field goal was unsuccessful, it is the shooter who would be awarded two free throws. Note that had the field goal attempt been successful, then it would be the offensive player who was pushed, who would attempt one additional free throw, to complete a potential three-point play.”
