Legal Play, RA does not apply, new possession in Lower Defensive Box, Incidental Contact

This is an example of a play where the Restricted Area does not apply, as the drive by the offensive player starts inside the Lower Defensive Box (the area from the bottom tip of the free throw circle to the baseline between the two 3′ posted-up marks). The defensive player here establishes a legal guarding position in the path of the offensive player before contact is made, and before the offensive player starts his upward motion. Since the Restricted Area does not apply to drives that start inside the Lower Defensive Box, and the contact on the play is incidental, there is no foul by either player on the play.
