“This is an example of an offensive foul, as the Restricted Area does not apply. The offensive player, Donovan Mitchell, extends his right leg into the defensive player, Mason Plumlee, in an effort to create space. The illegal contact initiated by the offensive player takes precedence over the defender’s position inside the Restricted Area, and therefore, this is an offensive foul. Please note that the Restricted Area does not apply in several situations, one of which is when an offensive player leads with his leg or knee into a defender, even if that defender is positioned within the Restricted Area. Note also, that the Restricted Area is the area within the arched line on the court below the rim. It applies to secondary defenders and was established to ensure offensive players have room to drive to the basket, without allowing defensive players an unfair advantage in drawing an offensive foul.”
