“This is an example of a defensive foul for illegal contact, as the defender does not maintain legal verticality. The defender, Goga Bitadze, does not maintain a legal vertical position, as he does not jump vertically, and instead he turns his body prior to contact with the shooter, Anthony Gill, and in doing so, the defender initiates illegal contact. To be considered legal, the defensive player must establish legal guarding position prior to the start of the offensive player’s upward motion, and he must also jump vertically in an attempt to defend the shot. The secondary defender here fails to meet that criteria, as the defender turning prior to contact is illegal, and it is a defensive foul.”
